Spring Break Trips That Actually Work for Families

Hi Reader,

Did you're family chat just go from holiday cheer to "OMG, where should we go for spring break?!" We've been fielding a lot of those questions lately, so we have thoughts.

Hawai'i: The Classic for a Reason

Most families head to Hawai'i for summer but Spring Break is where it's at in our (professional) opinion. The weather is reliably gorgeous (less humid than summer and warmer than winter), the waves are easier for beginners, and there’s enough to keep everyone, from tots to teenagers, entertained.

Our advice? Pick one island and go deep over 5 to 7 days. Maui works for families with its mix of beaches, the Road to Hana adventure, and whale watching excursions just off the coast. Meanwhile, the Big Island is ideal for families who want to experience lava flows, stargazing, and have a little more space.

The catch? Family-friendly resorts book out 8-10 weeks ahead. That window is closing.

Spring Skiing: The Active Family Trip

Hear us out: a family ski trip is simply more fun in the spring!

The snow is still excellent (often better than January), the days are longer and warmer, the lift lines are shorter, and the après-ski vibe is way more relaxed. Kids can ski in lighter layers, and you’re not battling single-digit temperatures.

Palisades, Sugar Bowl, Kirkwood, and Mammoth Mountain are our California picks because they offer world-class terrain with that laid-back California energy. Mammoth typically stays open through late May, making it perfect for later spring break dates.

Big Sur: The Comeback Story

After years of closures, Big Sur is back! The Highway 1 is fully reopen meaning this classic California trip deserves your attention.

For families, it's vacation magic: dramatic cliffs, redwood forests, secluded beaches, groves of flowers, elephant seal viewing, and that sense of adventure that comes from winding coastal roads. Pair it with a few nights on the Monterey Peninsula for a trip that feels epic without being exhausting.

Pro tip: Spring brings fewer crowds than summer but you still need to book by early February.

TLDR: Families who plan now have options. Families who wait have leftovers. If you want help for Spring Break (or to get ahead on summer) reach out, we've got you covered!

Bonjour Reader, I’m writing this from Nice, where I’ve spent the last few days eating my way through the city. Every trip, I have to visit the Cours Saleya market and get some absolute classics, like the chickpea pancake socca, and of course salade niçoise (no cooked vegetables, as any local will firmly remind you). On the road, I tend to live on the simple things. A good French carrot salad from a market vendor is my go-to when I need something quick. It’s simple and light, the kind of thing...

Hi Reader, Italy has trains, buses, ferries, rental cars, private drivers, and flights connecting every corner of the country. That’s the good news. The bad news? Knowing which one to use, and when, is the difference between a smooth trip and a stressful one. Our team has spent more than ten years figuring out the best combinations for every kind of traveler. Rachel’s personal record is twelve transfers in a single day (we don’t recommend this). Read our Italy transportation guide for all the...

Hi Reader, Planning a honeymoon in Hawai’i sounds simple until you realize there are six main islands, hundreds of resorts, and everyone on the internet has a very strong opinion about where you should go. Most of that advice is wrong, or at least, wrong for you. There’s no single “best” island. But after years of planning honeymoons here (and eating an unreasonable number of musubis in the name of research), we’ve gotten pretty good at matching couples to islands. Our full Hawai’i honeymoon...
