To Day Trip or Not to Day Trip: Your Italy Cheat Sheet!

Ciao, Reader,

You know that moment when you're planning your Italian adventure and think, "Hey, can't we just pop over to Lake Garda for a quick afternoon from Milan?" Spoiler Alert: That's a hard no!

Let's talk about the art of the Italian day trip – what's actually doable, what's better as an overnight, and how to avoid spending half your precious vacation time on a train. Consider this your cheat sheet to smart exploring!

🇮🇹FROM FLORENCE

YES: Bologna (35 mins by high-speed train)

The food capital of Italy is calling! Perfect for a day of pasta making, portico wandering, and probably the best mortadella of your life. Plus, with the quick train ride, you'll be back in Florence in time for aperitivo.

NO: Bolgheri

Look, we love this wine region, but trying to rush through Super Tuscan tastings in a day? That's like speed-dating through the Louvre. Give these incredible wines (and wineries) the time they deserve and spend a few days here instead of a day trip.

🇮🇹FROM MILAN

YES: Lake Como (45min -1 hour by train to Como Town)
Hello, Clooney-approved glamour! Hop on the train to Como, then take the ferry to Bellagio for lunch. Pro tip: Let us arrange a private driver to maximize your lake time and hit those hidden gems the train crowds miss.

NO: Lake Garda
Trust us – you'll want at least two to three nights here to properly explore those charming lakeside towns, meet makers of limoncello, and do cooking classes from a lakeside villa. Plus, the best hotels require a minimum stay (for good reason).

🇮🇹FROM ROME

YES: Frascati or Tivoli Gardens (30-45 mins by train/car)
These gems in the Roman hills are perfect for escaping the city heat. Think wine tasting in Renaissance villas or wandering through some of Italy's most spectacular gardens.

NO: Naples
As much as we love a good pizza pilgrimage, Naples deserves more than a drive-by. Between the archaeological museum, underground city, and the world's best pizza scene, you're shortchanging yourself with just a day.

🇮🇹FROM VENICE

YES: Murano & Burano (40 mins by vaporetto)
These colorful islands are the perfect Venice palette cleanser. Watch glass-blowing masters at work and snap photos of those famous rainbow houses.

NO: Verona
Sure, it's only 1.5 hours by train, but it would mean rushing through this town. Between the Roman amphitheater, medieval piazzas, and those charming wine and cocktail bars, you'll want to stick around for the evening passeggiata.

🇮🇹FROM NAPLES

YES: Procida (40 mins by ferry)
This candy-colored fishing island is the perfect taste of Mediterranean life, minus the Capri crowds. Do lunch, hit the beach, explore the medieval village.

NO: Positano
We get it – those pastel-hued cliffs are calling! But between the winding coastal roads, seasonal ferry schedules, and summer crowds, you'll spend more time in transit than actually enjoying your Aperol spritz. If you have this destination as a must do on your list you can overnight at one of the neighboring towns to make it a shorter commute.

Our team is all about making every minute of your Italian adventure count. Whether you need a private driver or boat for that perfect Lake Como day, or insider tips on when to actually take the train versus when it’s worth it to hire a private driver, we've got you covered.
